We are proud to introduce ourselves, Spring Theatreworks, as the next generation of theatre professionals. Our initiation formally began two months ago with the presentation of our inaugural production of T.S. Eliot’s MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL. We are excited to present the next show in our first season, Michael Weller’s sharp examination of American youth in the 1960’s, MOONCHILDREN.

Spring Theatreworks company member Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj makes his company directing debut with this production. He is a recent recipient of the Audelco 2000 Award for Excellence in Theatre for directing DAMN YANKEES and has been lauded by the New York Times as “…one of the most talented young directors in New York these days.”

In 2001, a revival of Michael Weller’s thirty year-old play is very appropriate. Those that were in their early twenties in 1965-66, like the characters in Moonchildren, are now our nation’s moral, social, parental, and more specifically our congressional and presidential, leaders. This play has given our company, and more importantly will give our audiences a chance to relive, re-evaluate and re-examine just how much of a dramatic influence the erratic social climate of the 1960’s had on America. On the brink of graduating from college, seven cohabitating students are faced with entering a “real world” consisting of race riots, the Vietnam War, anti-war protests, parents dying of cancer, and the fickleness of young love. The young naïveté of America is washed away as we see these children get pushed into that world. This play gives us a frame through which to view our current social and political climate, which, ironically, is now under the guidance of these same “moonchildren.” Donations will be collected after each performance to benefit The Veterans Vietnam Restoration Project, whose primary mission is to provide American Vietnam War Veterans with opportunities to return to Vietnam to do humanitarian aid projects.

Spring Theatreworks is focused on challenging the limits of modern theatre and modern audiences. We recognize our responsibility as cultural representatives of our civilization. We look forward to building a positive and nurturing relationship with our community and we hope you enjoy the performance!
